How to Create your own Ink using Gouache

I have always to use gouache to create my custom calligraphy ink. I have also adored Surbhi Arora‘s inks which she made using this medium. Thus, I decided to invite for a guest post on how to create custom beautiful inks from gouache.
Gouache (pronounced gwash) is a paint medium from the 18th Century which is a mix of synthetic pigments, gum arabic and water. Gouache helps in precision, flat colour coverage and crisp edges.
 
Gouache is used to create calligraphy inks as it is vibrant and opaque. It also blends beautifully.
 
Supplies you require-
 
Gouache (you don’t necessarily need the expensive ones, look for good quality like Brustro)
Water
Dinky Jar
Dropper
Stirrer/ Paintbrush
Gum Arabic (if required)
 
Pour some gouache into a dinky jar-
 
 
Add Water and Stir-
 
Add around the same amount of water as gouache. It is preferable to use distilled water but water works just fine. You can use a dropper to do this to avoid errors. Then, use your stirrer/paintbrush (the back of your calligraphy holder should also work) to stir. The consistency should ideally be milk-like. Voila, you gouache ink is ready to use.
 
 
Some Tips about gouache-
When storing your gouache ink, use airtight containers like dinky jars.
If your ink isn’t flowing smoothly, you might need to add some gum arabic.
