What motivated you to learn calligraphy?
I have always loved writing in general, let it be writing with a ball pen, gel pen or anything like that. I was studious in nature and I didn’t know calligraphy existed as it wasn’t that popular earlier. While I was pursuing my masters, which was extremely stressful, I stumbled upon calligraphy, precisely brush lettering, and found my happy place in it, and kept on exploring more gradually.
What inspired you to start teaching?
After achieving a level of proficiency in my work, I received many inquires to teach. Being an over-explainer, has really helped me in sharing detailed knowledge, which is vital, when teaching calligraphy. I have always loved interacting and meeting new people and via my
sessions and workshops, I was able to do the same. My student’s amazing support really
motivated me to continue and conduct even more workshops, and then definitely when I see their happiness in the art, it only motivates me to spread the beautiful artform even more. I have taught over 3000 students till date, and I’m extremely grateful to them for making me a tiny part of their calligraphy journey.
What does calligraphy mean to you?
Calligraphy means happiness to me, I started calligraphy when everything around me was extremely chaotic and calligraphy helped me find my little happy place back then, and it still does that for me and I try my best to spread this beautiful artform and I love seeing how it becomes the same for them since its so therapeutic.
What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment in the Calligraphy world?
Calligraphy is much more than pretty letters, traditional scripts have their own history, isn’t it amazing how some letters can give you fragrance of an entire era, reflect the time, the qualities of people, the popular tools and so much more. The very fact that calligraphy, which is concretely an art of beautifying letters is so much more than the letters, is one of the most appealing things to me. How different letters can give a totally different vibe and effect on the reader.
Who were the people who encouraged you throughout your calligraphic journey?
My first cheerleaders were my roommates and they have been always encouraged and pushed me.
What was the inspiration behind the name Letterati?
I was looking for ideas and names and asked my friends for suggestions. One of them, suggested this as Letter and Art.
What are your favourite tools?
My favourite nib is Leonardt Principal EF nib and my favourite go-to ink and Canson Marker Paper is my favourite paper.
Which was the first thing you learnt in Calligraphy?
I had started out with brush calligraphy as it comparatively easier and more popular.
How did you manage your college load along with Calligraphy?
I used to organize a workshop after my semester ended and one when it had just commenced and there wasn’t much workload. I remember after my dinner; my friends and I use to try out different flat lays for my work.
Who do you consider as your first mentor?
I consider Barbara Calzoari as my first mentor. I loved her approach and I feel like she ignited a passion and love for the script.
