Watercolour Galaxy Background Step by Step Tutorial with Mariya Rupawala

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and felt a deep sense of wonder? Galaxies are a masterpiece of nature. Today, let’s paint a piece of that cosmic beauty together!

I’ve always been fascinated by galaxies, and watercolour art is something I’m passionate about (after calligraphy, of course!). The way colours dance on paper is something I could watch all day!

These watercolour backgrounds are an incredible way to complement your calligraphy and make beautiful finished pieces. You can use them to make framed artworks, on canvases or maybe even on a letter. The options are endless!

Let’s dive into this step by step tutorial and create your very own mesmerising galaxy artwork!

About me:
Hi there! I am Mariya Rupawala, a Surat based Calligrapher & Artist. I am obsessed with all things handwritten and just love how they add a personal touch to everything. I am a certified night owl who gets all the best ideas at midnight, and you will always find me doing late-night art experiments!

Here’s what I’m using:

  • Brustro 300gsm Watercolor Paper
  • Camlin Artist Watercolors (Violet, Cobalt blue, Cerulean blue)
  • Handmade gold watercolour
  • Round Brushes (4,8)
  • Pentel Brushpen

Step 1. Wet the paper with water & add the first colour

Start by fully wetting the paper with water, and then add the first colour, i.e., violet, and let it spread a little along with the water.

Step 2. Adding the second colour of the galaxy

While the first colour is still wet, add the second colour, i.e. cobalt blue, diluted with a little bit of water & start mixing it with the first colour. Add a little bit more water if it gets patchy to merge both colours properly.

Step 3. Adding the third colour of the galaxy

We will continue the same process as in step 2 to merge the second and third colours, i.e. cobalt blue.

Step 4. Process

Repeat the steps 1,2 and 3 to complete the whole galaxy.

Step 5. Adding another layer

I like adding another layer of watercolours to enhance the galaxy’s colours, repeating the exact process, but this time with a little bit more water to give the galaxy more depth!

Step 6. Adding the gold splatters

Galaxies are incomplete without stars! Here, we will add gold stars using the brush splatter technique to fill our galaxy with stars!

Step 7. Calligraphy Quote

After it has dried completely, finish the galaxy art piece by calligraphing your favourite quote & adding a few embellishments. Here, I have added sparkles & dots.

And voila! Your watercolour galaxy artwork is ready!
